College life can get expensive - from unexpected bills to the cost of groceries and books, financial stress is the last thing you need when trying to focus on your studies.
That’s where the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) comes in! Managed by the Access Office at the University of Limerick, the SAF is designed to help students through tough financial spots so you can stay on track with your degree.
Here is your quick, easy-to-read guide on what the fund covers, who can apply, key dates, and how to get help.
What is the Student Assistance Fund?
The Student Assistance Fund provides financial support to both full-time and part-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate) who are experiencing financial hardship while attending college.
Whether you’re facing unexpected expenses or finding it hard to cover everyday living costs, this fund is here to lighten the load.
What can the fund cover?
The fund can assist with a wide range of day-to-day and essential college costs, including:
- Books & Class Materials (textbooks, lab gear, course software)
- Rent & Utility Bills (electricity, heating, Wi-Fi)
- Food & Groceries
- Essential Travel (commuting expenses)
- Childcare Costs
- Medical Costs (doctor visits, prescriptions)
What is NOT covered?
It’s important to note that the fund cannot cover:
- Tuition or registration fees
- Student loan repayments
- Costs covered directly by your higher education institution
Who is not eligible for SAF?
- Students who link into a semester
- Students on courses that do not lead to an undergraduate/postgraduate qualification, such as Foundation or Access courses
- International students are not eligible for the Student Assistance Fund and are advised to contact the International Office if in need of financial support
- Non University of Limerick Erasmus students are not eligible for the Student Assistance Fund and are advised to contact their own institution if in need of financial support
Important dates to remember!
Mark your calendars so you don't miss out on the application window:
- Opens: October 1st, 2026 at 12:00 PM (Noon)
- Closes: November 26th, 2026 at 3:00 PM (15:00)
Please note: You can only apply to the Student Assistance Fund once a year.
Tip: Don't wait until the last minute! Gather your supporting documents early so you can submit your application smoothly. Remember, there are deadlines for getting your application in and the link only works at certain times during the semester.

- Student Centre: Every Monday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
